| This photo is from iStockphoto. They offer quality images for a moderate price and can be used to create some rather exciting bulletin covers. I, personally, prefer working with photos for cover art. God's creation offers a far more infinite variety of images than my poor brain could ever imagine! |

The bulletin cover to the right for Holy Trinity Sunday includes a dazzling graphic from the Scripture Pics website. Matt has created some wonderful images that follow the lectionary and can be used in many ways - bulletin covers, powerpoint presentations, posters, etc. Some, however, do not translate well to black/white print. With this trinity image the dove disappeared, but that didn't seem to make too much difference for my particular use of it at the time. While I enjoy creating some of my own graphics, I don't often have the time to do that. Matt's images are exciting, new and, even more excellent, they are FREE! Well done, Matt! Now this next cover is an example of the use of black/white images - simple, clear, crisp, to-the-point. This graphic is from the Newsletter Newsletter website. I would venture that most church secretaries know about the print/cd versions put out by Communication Resources, Inc., if they don't use the online source. They've been around a long time and have been a mainstay for graphics, children's bulletins and general information for a church secretary's use. Black/white can be every bit as powerful as color. If you don't have access to a color printer at your church, don't be discouraged. There are many options out there for you to create impressive bulletin covers. |

 | I have used Microsoft Publisher for desktop publishing for many years now. Churches don't tend to purchase Macs. But at home I have a Mac, and since there is no desktop software other than the exorbitantly priced InDesign and Quark Express for Mac usage, I am now working with Apple's Pages from the iWork bundle. I really like it, so far. I have worked with both InDesign and Quark and, yes, they are the ultimate in professional desktop publishing. But, both Publisher and Pages suit me just fine for my needs. The bulletin cover to the left was done in Pages. The main graphic comes from a Sundays and Seasons collection. I will have more discussions along the way of the many uses of that Augsburg Fortress website. | | | |

I would like this website to become not just a storefront for me personally, but a place to discuss just what it takes to put together a bulletin every Sunday or a church newsletter every month (or twice a month or weekly) or a new ministry brochure or a poster for the youth fundraiser or...or... I wonder just how many newcomers to the position of Church Secretary are totally blown away when they discover that their "secretary" job includes becoming editor-in-chief, desktop publisher, researcher, printer and ace reporter? The other day I sat at my desk blinking in awe at how I came to be the person my co-worker could confidently ask to find a picture of an empty mayonnaise jar. Really. How did that happen? |

Not all churches can afford a full-time or even part-time staff these days to fulfill everyday, weekly, monthly and seasonal needs. Volunteers are called upon to fill in the gaps - and God bless the wonderful volunteers who do step in and perform the little “miracles” that keep many churches running! However, depending on volunteers routinely can lead to bulletins, newsletters, etc., that are far less welcoming and professional-looking to both members and visitors alike.
Swan Church Services offers a solution - professionally done desktop publishing with the focus of a church’s specific needs without the hiring of staff or providing benefits. Communication can be done via phone or email. Documents are available in Microsoft Word and/or PDF form for easy access for your preference in printing options. Whether you need assistance for a specific brochure or flyer, fill-in due to vacations or illness, or desktop service on a more permanent basis, Swan Church Services may fill your needs. Also offered is assistance in copywriting, editing and proofreading of documents and manuscripts. |
